William (Bill) Smith, Ph.D. is an author, psychotherapist, consultant, and personal development coach. My private practice focuses
on E-therapy (online counseling), phone counseling, and face-to-face session with survivors of trauma, rape, childhood
abuse, relationship concerns, and anyone else troubled by depression or confusing emotions and who is ready to ask for my help.
My Philosophy
As a psychotherapist and consultant, I philosophically believe in the ability of mankind to achieve any goal truly
desired. Furthermore, I believe that a human being's capacity for personal growth is limited solely by his or her imagination. Man
is a unique organism, and is the only organism with the capacity to transcend environment. Man is a self-creating being who
was not innately endowed with personality and goals; but must choose them by acts of individual decisions.
Education and Training
I earned my doctoral degree in psychology from Kensington University, Glendale, CA. My master's in psychology was earned at Long
Island University, Brooklyn, NY. I also completed the Graduate Program in Family Counseling at Long Island University. I earned
my bachelor of arts degree from Lehman College, Bronx, NY, with a double major in psychology and sociology.
Post Graduate Training
I completed four years of intensive training in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Lenox Hill Hospital and
Medical Center, New York City, and received additional supervisory training at the Washington Square Institute for Mental Health.
Prior to beginning private practice, I was employed at the Montefiore Medical Center Employee Assistance Program as staff
psychologist and later as assistant director. I gained more than 20 years of experience at Montefiore.
During my professional life I have had the opportunity to teach the concepts and theories of psychology in general and
psychoanalytic psychology at several post-graduate institutes in the NY/NJ area, including those from which I received training.
At present I am an adjunct professor of psychology at Hudson County Community College.
Publications
The International Journal of Communicative Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy published several of my articles on the subject of
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Childhood Sexual Abuse, Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), and several articles in
other publication on drug abuse and alcoholism.
Unpublished Doctoral Thesis
